Why is religion so repugnant to some people

That's how the catholic church is so rich and has all that money.

When I was young I attended a Baptist church, later they put me in a Catholic school. It was a rude awakening. I learned real fast nuns and priest were not what they claimed they were. I still have no use for them, I don't hate all religions. There is good and bad in everything.

There may be good and bad in everything, but proportions aren't the the same. Organized religion features a pretty negative ratio, I think.
