I don't look at anti-theist as being mean, actually my definition is not even in the ballpark of how one treats believers. In the world inside my head, I define an atheist as some who rejects the notion of any sort of god and couldn't be bothered with conversation or debate about religion. Religion = waste of time.
An anti-theist is a person who takes in interest in opposing religion, its stories, and values. Making a stand against the 800 pound gorilla that is religion is worth the fight to an anti-theist.
To me, I'm one or the other depending on mood, motivation, or time available.

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
Epicurus
