I've seen a few football games since coming here: still a fucking mystery to me. If I was going to believe a capricious and contradictory spirit being was involved in anything, it'd probably be American football.

It is rather unlike anything else, isn't it? You are supposed to carry rather than dribble the ball with hands or feet. Many of the players hardly if ever touch the ball and they aren't expected to. Physical contact and pushing each other over is encouraged as is just plain grabbing other players, but not always. . .

The action comes to a complete halt every time the ball touches the ground, after which there is an elaborate team face-off before the ball moves again. The ball switches hands for reasons of time and distance carried rather than just touching the ground. You can make a score by putting the ball through the goal posts, but you can make more points by running over the end-line.

It's almost as strange as cricket.
