I would see his bet, and raise him that marriage doesn't do jack shit in the legal sense and is only symbolic religiously, and all legal benefits now come solely form civil unions. Only legal officials can issue civil unions. Unions cannot be denied to consenting adults based on orientation.

(All existing marriages are retroactively converted to civil unions to preserve existing benefits.)
