Many religious people instill a very strong sense of guilt in their followers. Everyone should feel guilty just for being born, but women have the extra guilt of being born female. I distinctly recall a day when I was maybe 7 or 8 and our pastor did an entire sermon on how women are naturally manipulative and that's why god commands men to be the leaders of the family and keep their women under their wing. It's to protect them from themselves. To save them from their own sinful nature, and as a father would use discipline to turn his daughter back to god so shall it be between a man and his wife. I will never forget that sermon so long as I live.
This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. You were 7 or 8 and the bullshit bells were already ringing.
It made me feel uncomfortable, but I thought it was just because something was wrong with me. I know from personal experience how hard it is to break away from the guilt and the shame. I've barely been an atheist for 1 year. I was still a "Christian" when I joined TTA. I was afraid. I was raised to be afraid.
