I am sorry to hear about your positive test results peregrine.Regarding religion I am an atheist who was a former Pentecostal evangelist.I have been an atheist for about 14 years now.I still have interest in the subject of death and a world without God.I feel that the belief in gods/godesses is nothing more than mans quest to understand the world we live in and his place in it.Religion helps us explain those things which in those primitive times were once unknowable before there were actual sciences not hindered by superstition to explain such natural phenomenon as rain, earthquakes and natural disasters etc.
Greek mythology illustrates this point perfectly. In Greek myth they have a god or goddess for just about every natural phenomenon or occurence.Hence as a result of these beliefs they made up rituals to appease the gods when things went wrong. This is a rather simplistic explanation of where I believe our religious beliefs originated from.I do agree with you to an extent regarding the powers of government using religion as a means of controlling the masses through fear. But I believe this was a later development.

There is nothing people will not maintain when they are slaves to superstition
