I learned to program in Basic on our whole school district's one main frame computer which I communicated with via one of the three dial-up modems at the high school. I reserved my time a week in advance because there were 2000 students plus staff to those three modems. Fortunately most of those 2000 weren't remotely interested. To operate the modem you put the phone receiver in a slot and dialed. The interface was not a computer screen. It was a printer a noisy dot matrix printer. The printer printed out what I typed and what the computer responded.
Explaining a mainframe computer to the kids took a while at dinner last night.
