My 13 year old step son came to me last year and told me that he wished he had been born a girl. He hates his body. His self esteem is shot. I love him though and I tell him this all the time. I tell him that he has a right to his feelings, but not to hate on himself too much because there are still so many wonderful qualities about himself that have not yet been brought out. I encourage him and encourage him to do whatever makes him happy. Painting his nails and trying on makeup makes him happy. His mother has a problem with embracing his differences. This is new territory for all of us, but being supportive is the best thing we can do for him.
If there is anything I could do differently, I welcome your suggestions, Norman. I want my stepson to feel safe and supported and most importantly, loved.
