As I often say to these people, if you need god not to slaughter people, then please don't stop believing, for all our sakes.
The thing is, they are wrong about that, just like they are wrong about so many other things.
So if they stopped believing in god, they would not go out and kill people randomly.
If you want to get some data on this idea, start a new thread and ask atheists who used to be Christians who, when they were Christians, believed that the only reason to not do horrible things was because of religion, whether they went out and killed people randomly when they deconverted. Other than the ones who make a joke of responding, I doubt you will find even one who did.
