Not quite. It has more to do with breaking society's norms and taboos.
What do you mean by past i mean we are still a hated minority in the US and even in some Westernized countries. Just because the law was overturned no to long ago it doesn't mean they are making things easier for us. The only real good thing is that well because of the internet and also how much knowledge we know now compared to then we are less ignorant and more and more churches are closing. Southern states tend to be the worst for atheists compared to the north and even still in the north there may be some backlash.
So making things easier for atheists includes churches closing... Gee, I wonder why the progress is going so slow with that hostile attitude.
