Whether something is a psychiatric disorder or not is a social construct. Prior to 1973, the American Psychiatric Association classified homosexuality as a mental disorder. In 1973, they decided it was not a mental disorder. Homosexuality, though, was the same before and after 1973. What changed were attitudes toward it.
