I'm 15 and I go to a Catholic school in the UK. You're probably wondering "WTF is an Atheist doing in a Catholic school!". Well, I was born in Poland, and Poland is a very Catholic country. Naturally my parents brought me up as a catholic and up until the age 13 I was quite a devout Catholic. I say my parents brought me up, I mean my mum that's because my Dad identifies himself as an Atheist.
It seems like I'm just kind of talking about random crap about my life. I just thought I'd tell people how I ended up in a Roman Catholic school. The main problem I have is that whenever I express my opinion when in Religion class (Religious Eductation is mandatory in my school) I'm usually persecuted for it. Thankfully not by my teacher as she is very open minded and tolerant. But by the people in my class, not all but by the majority. I don't really go around and force people into atheism and force them to stop believing in their God then I would just be taking away their right of belief and religion, but I just express my opinion when asked in Religion class. One of my questions is that should I keep on express my opinion as I have the right to it or just sit there in class and just not say anything. I would prefer to still be able to express my opinion as I like discussing these type of things with people.
My next dilema is that ever so often our school would have a mass with a priest from the local church and then of course people will go up to take their communion. I usually stand up and try and sneak out of the hall so I don't have to take the communion, I rarely succeed and when I don't I get shouted by some teachers and forced to take the communion. I'm quite unhappy with that. I really want to talk my year leader about this and ask if I can not take part in the communion, but I'm scared I would just get asked to leave out of her office and ignored. So, should I risk and speak to her and then maybe succeed or should I just go along with everyone else and take the communion. I'm not the only Atheist in the school I have a few friends who are Atheists. But I guess we're just all too scared to speak out.
Thanks for reading.
