In my job, I do butt loads of required mental gymnastics forms called "5 Why's." I'm going to put my answers in but I'd love to hear yours as well, you might have better ones.
It's basically a tool to get down to the root causes of problems.
So let's pick the issue of Grey's death using our best guess.
Grey is attacked and murdered by police while in police custody.
1. Why? - Likely because the cops wanted teach him a lesson in "cop respect" and he was too slow of a student.
2. Why? - The cops take a "us against them" mentality and often the "Them" become stereotyped and racially focused.
3. Why? - The cops' "Beat" is separate from his home so that he lives in a more lawful neighborhood than the one he patrols, giving him the feeling that he is an outsider going into a "Zoo."
4. Why? - The police don't want to live in an area that is insecure.
5. Why? - Insecure places keep the poor in poverty due to theft, make raising kids without bad social influence and bullying impossible, stifle civic improvements, and create stressful living environments.
Why are there insecure places in America? Not enough money to hire cops from within every neighborhood, because republicans have squeezed local coffers to the point that they send a fewer cops in cars to cover long distances and make entry into police academies expensive. The small pool of cops again reinforces the Fraternity thinking of "Us verses Them." A bad idea in my opinion.
