How about, seen as ex-staff aren't really a group of their own who 'do' anything per se (they don't really represent anything other than the fact they've been on staff right?) how about letting them choose from a selection of colours that aren't already in use, that would otherwise make them different to a 'regular' user? Teal, pink, orange, black, brown (ew)? Even fucking rainbow coloured? Why not?
I like the idea of having a uniquely coloured username I'm not gonna lie, although I understand if people think it'd be confusing or if people just plain think it's a "hey, look at me, I'm different" kind of thing to do. Also if other people think it would ruin the aesthetics of the forum that's a fair shout too, but I've been on other forums and they have all kinds of pretty usernames and I like it.
As for donator colours, I actually prefer the gold, it makes more sense than purple to me.
But these are just my 2 cents on the matter, do with them what you will.
