You don't think so? Whe. Last I checked, I live in a country where a substantial fraction of the population trusts snake-oil-selling theologians and distrusts scientists. Anecdotally, my ex, who isn't completely stupid and has a college education, falls into that category.
Free spread of information (which I would agree is a good thing) can certainly hurt science when such a substantial fraction trusts bullshit over reason.
