Napo... napo, napo, napo, napo.... Imagine investing the time to read 4000+ pages of a series of books only to see one of the main characters killed off, another blinded, another in slavery, another captured... not to mention the countless other characters that got axed along the way...
Remember Maester Luwin? Yeah.... I kinda liked the guy...
And yet, the story goes on.
The story is not about characters... it's about the world where the characters live and die... and the world goes on. Each death sends that world tumbling, but it ends up finding a new footing.
I think George is building a believable world, where death is a very real threat for any living creature, unlike the standard fairytale world where our heroes are always rescued at the last minute.
Sure, I'd like to see Jon revived... and I'd like to know what was so special about his parents... but George doesn't really have to tell us those things for this story of ice and fire to come a conclusion.
Ice and Fire - Dragons and whitewalkers - everything else is filler!
