At face value, the actions of this god are not for the betterment of humanity. Whether or not any unknown details would exonerate him of at least some of this stuff, all we can really do is look at what he supposedly did and use our Human understanding to decide whether it's good or not. Flawed as it can be, it's all we have.
Now as for understanding him, we really can't. he isn't around for us to collaborate with. There is no reliable source of information about him. It isn't the bible/torah/quran, for the simple fact that people have been killing each other over how to interpret these books for thousands of years.
The best we can do is take it at face value, with no presuppositions, or working backwards from a conclusion, or anything else. At face value you have a god who most commonly interacts with people by killing them, sending people to kill them, or threatening to kill them. Death is the punishment for nearly every crime, you are sentenced to death or torture as soon as you are born, and have to beg him not to do it and enslave yourself to him to have any chance of happiness after this life. And in some cases, you may be sentenced to hell just because you were happy in this life, like one rich guy in the bible.
