I was answering a question someone had about what I believed in regards to a third party.
That's a little different from directly telling an atheist "God has mercy on you." Which I would never do, just as I would never say "God bless you", or "I will pray for you." Which I believe to be condescending and disrespectful to say to a non believer.
But if someone asks me what I believe about something that does not apply to them, I will tell them honestly, and this is what I did above.
No. No it isn't different. It's just as offensive.
'I believe catholics are idiots' is less offensive than 'you're an idiot', to you? 'I hate women' is less offensive than 'I hate you'?
It's disrespectful to say that to anybody, not just non believers.
