That's a little different from directly telling an atheist "God has mercy on you." Which I would never do, just as I would never say "God bless you", or "I will pray for you." Which I believe to be condescending and disrespectful to say to a non believer.
But if someone asks me what I believe about something that does not apply to them, I will tell them honestly, and this is what I did above.
No. No it isn't different. It's just as offensive.
'I believe catholics are idiots' is less offensive than 'you're an idiot', to you? 'I hate women' is less offensive than 'I hate you'?
It's disrespectful to say that to anybody, not just non believers.
I'm sorry you feel that way, but if my beliefs are offenssive to people, then perhaps they should not ask. I did not give that information off voluntarily. I merely answered a question that was asked directly to me. I can see how upset people get here when I don't answer their questions, or even when I don't answer immediately, so this kind of leaves me in a lose lose situation.
Furthermore, if I had answered the question with "God condemns people," I'd be accused of being disrespectful. I answered with "God has mercy on people," (which is my real answer) and I'm still accused of being disrespectful. Once again, lose lose. It is what it is.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."
