Natural selection is usually only applied to individuals though. Murder is often good for the survival of an individual. Why do so many people not want to murder (since you brought up the topic). Why would you care about the life of another person, presuming you could get away with it?
Natural selection and evolution in general applies to populations. Some humans don't care about other peoples lives, but if that persons genes become dominate in the population, it will go extinct. A population where people naturally work together is going to be the most prosperous. We are part of the population that was the most prosperous since we are not extinct.
