I'd have thought Husband and Wife had lost much of their historical baggage over the past fifty years and now merley denote the gender of your spouse.

I don't see what's wrong with a gay guy calling his spouse his husband, a lesbain her spouse her wife. Unless that gender neutral noun stuff takes off which seems pretty unlikely.
