I've had a couple of OBEs, and I can confirm that they are very real as an experience, and a very exciting experience at that. I can also confirm that you can produce one through training and mental tricks.

The problem with the nutters is they take every experience as a representation of external reality, rather than as an expression of the functioning of the self.
