Apparently, some of these people believe if you ask for patience, for example, then god would create events in your life that would frustrate or even harm you so that you will learn patience.
I would encourage you to pray for anything...and let God answer as He sees fit.
However, I see the logic of their counsel.
How does one learn patience if not by trial?
