I was one of those little boys you look at and can tell from a mile away, "you're gay you just don't know it yet". I was very feminine. However, at no point did I ever want to be female or feel discomfort at being male. This is about identity more than gender roles. Gender roles mean nothing, they are just what society tell us men do and women do, so often and casually that they become "truths". They have absolutely no meaning or no relevance to sex organs.
^^This.
To take the general case here, these are children who report from the time they're toddlers that their sex organs feel "wrong." This isn't a case of a boy saying "I want to dress like a girl" or even "I want to be a girl." This is a case of a boy saying "No, I am a girl." So much of this strife is confusing cross-dressing with transgender.
Metis, please check out the posts I made referencing the NIH study about neural pathways and brain chemistry in transgender individuals.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
