It was written by a German aesthetic philosopher. Since then it has been picked up by a lot of religious people, who consider it to be completely in line with the Gospels. I got it from an Episcopalian.
I agree with you that even non-religious people can find it lovely -- as is true of the quote in the OP as well.
Correct! Rumi was a poet. It was not an Islamic quote although Sufis consider Rumi a founder.
