"To protect the slaves"....perhaps, and this is just me brainstorming here......god should have given us a mandate along the lines of "thou shalt not own slaves"..rather than a guideline for beatings? I mean, I'm obviously not omniscient, or omnibenevolent...and that jumps right out at me. God's going to be capable of doing a better job at the whole commandments thing than I am, right Corn? Maybe slave owners wrote that, it had nothing to do with god. Is that entirely unreasonable? You wouldn't have to jump through hoops to make it okay.
