In my case I make a distinction between atheism and nonbelief, because for my whole life I've been a nonbeliever- let's call it deism, because I had the loosest of loose concepts of god, and beyond that a desire that there be one, but only the smallest pulses of faith.
But then I got interested in this stuff. I began watching debates, scoping out arguments for and against god, and what I found was not only that the arguments for the atheist position were more compelling, but that the majority of the liars, spin doctors, fraudsters and simple terrible debaters were on the side of god.
I became an atheist by watching other atheists, but I became an active one who argues about this shit because of the magnitude of the dishonesty and poor argumentation from the theistic side. The former was compelling, the latter pissed me off enough to want to do something about it.
