What I know for sure is, that it is done publicly.

Did you know that for the death penalty they simply use a fleet of trucks with cranes?
They drive from town to town with it and where it happens to be they execute the entire death row.

But not with the usual hanging.
If you hang someone like we use to do in the west, you let the body fall one meter with a rope arrounf the neck, which snaps the spine causing instant death (still done in Japan)
In Iran, the rope is put arround the neck, the other end fixed on the crane and the victim is slowly lifted in the air.
This way death can take up to 30 minutes, the victims struggles for air and the rope sometimes even cuts through the throat:



And when stonings are done, the victim is burried up to the shoulders so stones can be directly fired onto the head.
