Sadly the Quran glorifies being killed in battle, I believe. So that can be motivation enough.
What's to understand? They wanted to die in Allah's name, and picking a Jewish market meant that they could burnish their posthumous credentials amongst the fanatics, I think.
It's too bad they weren't captured alive to spend the rest of their lives in ignominy, but like Brian37 said, killing them ain't a bad way to end it. It's a pity that more innocents were killed, but it could have been worse -- I understand that 16 survived the ordeal.
