I don't see it as letting people walk all over you. You can and should still respond to people's insults/etc, but you do it with love rather than with hatred and more insults.
There are people who don't understand anything else but insults and even aggression. I meet such people all the time. You call them "rednecks" in US English, we call them "selianduri" which means the same.
Years ago such a redneck from the deepest god forsaken country came to my city and began to insult us all. We (I) are patient people and I ignored him for some time but he continued. One day I just had enough of him and punched him in the face, took 2 of his teeth out. Well, he was a boxer and beated me back but the thing is he never came back to my city. Next time I saw him on the sea beach in another city, he walked around me, pretending he can't see me.
