The injections are into a large muscle in the back, hence the shaving with long hair (these dogs get shaved even for a blood draw). She was touch and go for a long while. If I recall correctly she was on cage rest for 4 months. But then she had other co-morbid issues.

Every one we have had did have the adult worms. We only had one who did not have microfilaria as well. And yeah they get the shot routine but the vets do not shave them and Golden are quite fuzzy.
We've also never had a dog with a negative reaction to the shots.
Don't know what to tell you Min. Most everything I've read or heard states that the injection site(s) should be shaved/visable. Treated dogs are at risk for sterile abscess at the injection site.

Maybe ask your vet why they don't shave.
