My siblings and I chalk up our love of pets to the fact that we had a father who was a veterinarian who didn't like animals in the house. He grew up on a farm and all the animals there had a job to do.
I did have a hamster when I was real young. But other than that we did not have house pets when I was growing up. The one dog we had was trained for hunting though his skills in that area were seldom used.
My brother and his wife have had a dog (one at a time) since before they married nearly thirty years ago. They also often were boarding my sister-in-law's mother's dogs quite frequently as that is the movingest women I have ever met. So, often they had their dog and two others living with them.
My sister used to have rabbits in her apartment in Chicago. She is allergic to cats and worked too much to have a dog. Now she has five cats and a standing biweekly appointment for allergy shots. Since dad's ashes currently reside with her we have decided that dad is in hell...he hated...and I mean hated cats. Now he lives with five and there have been times when my niece's two cats have taken up residence too. Were dad not dead...this would surely do him in.
Over the years my kids and I have had, along with the aforementioned critters, hamsters, a turtle, fish, parakeets, and finches.
My neighbors probably wonder just how many animals are here with all the Chewy.com deliveries that arrive. And once every five weeks the groomer shows up and our garage is transformed into a doggie spa.
As for the other...the mastectomies were done nine years ago October 26th. I did not opt for chemo or radiation. Reconstruction was started at that time and finished in March of the next year. Doing well, thanks.
