As bad as heroin is, at least it doesn't do this:
And that's a bowdlerised version of what Krokodil does to human flesh. The real thing is a hell of a lot crueller.
Krokodil is ugly stuff. The whole flesh-eating thing is what happens when it's improperly extracted. But yea, point taken. I think a much better route is to make drugs legal and allow addicts medically supervised access to the drugs and, hopefully, rehabilitation. Call me optimistic, I guess. I have more faith in humanity than many.
But that's the ultimate question, isn't it? Is making guns illegal even thinkable in 2019 in the US? NOPE. Next question becomes, what CAN we do? Stricter gun control and better education is a start. But i truly believe we need to tackle the deeper problem in our country... Our attitudes towards guns and violence. How do we do that? No fucking clue.

Yes that can happen, and has happened, but as someone who lives in Australia with strict gun control policies, this has not been much of a problem, but it has happened a bit here and there. And if it was simple enough, that kid wouldn't be using a knife to try to stab people. He'd be shooting them down instead, and it wouldn't have been as easy to trap him and prevent him from causing further injuries and murders.
And yet I think you're missing the point here. Do you think that if Australia suddenly had the amount of firearms that the US does you'd just start having a school shooting every week? I doubt it.
You act as if these people don't plan these attacks weeks, months, even years in advance. You think they couldnt work out how to get a gun off the streets in the mean time?
No offense but I just don't think you can compare Australia and the States. We are, unfortunately dealing with a problem unique to our society. That is going to make our road ahead much more difficult.
That makes the problem much more complicated for the lets-ban-guns liberals. Banning guns will never happen here. Stricter gun control is a great start but still doesn't solve our problem.
