What's the point of cutting off his hand? Whats the point of torturing prisoners?
The point is spreading fear between criminals or any person who wants to commit robbery in the future.
Though, eye witnesses can be filtered and validated through many steps of trial. In our age, cameras might be used too.
Sounds like cruelty is the point. Spreading fear makes people fearful, but it doesn't prevent them from committing crimes. You end up with a larger pile of severed hands and no fewer criminals.
I have to ask, though, what was with all that kumbaya horseshit from earlier? Maybe we should rape people to death with frozen cheesecakes, to spread fear. It won't prevent crime, but neither will cutting off appendages.
