Quote:The criterion of embarrassment is built upon the idea that the church would not invent a saying or action of Jesus that it would find to be somehow embarassing.

Embarrassing to whom? To the ancient gnostics who thought "jesus" was standing nearby laughing at the silly humans who tried to crucify him? Or to the imperial church who somehow convinced itself that their peasant day laborer needed the trappings of robes and crowns?

The Jews invented a status of mass slavery for themselves. Surely that would have been an "embarrassment" except that they also invented a god who favored them and led them to victory.

Embarrassment is in the eye of the beholder.

Meanwhile, Rhett Butler said " Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" and he remains a fictional character.....just like jesus.

When you view the bible from the angle of it being a repository of mythology and legend cobbled together from different sources and presented against a background of the occasional historical event (and the New Testament in particular being incredibly poor fan fiction of the Old), it's not at all surprising to find inaccuracies and contradictions. It's when someone starts taking them seriously instead of the plot holes that they would be in any other context that the mental gymnastics begin. Or worse.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Do I win a pony?

Why do you think that Jesus was a fictional character rather than the subject of legend (defined as fictional stories based upon a real person). George Washington was a real person but he did not cut down a cherry tree and then proclaim his own truthfulness--"I cannot tell a lie."

Just add some authentic material about Jesus into your mix and I think you will have a more accurate idea of what we are dealing with--a mixture of some facts with mostly fiction.

Why do you ask?
