Trivia: The word "pagan" comes from the Latin "paganus ,and originally meant something like "bumpkin",referring to rural people who lived away from the roads and cities.
It doesn't really just have to do with technology how sophisticated you are, even though it have something to do with it, but also about knowledge. Romans wheren't specially advanced in science, philosphy or technology outside the military area as the Greeks, Persians and so on. They had little knowledge about anything besides warfare. As I said it speak to istelf when you discover that there haven't existed one single famous Roman mathematician.
