Many don't participate in discussion because they're told not to.

Don't blame us for pastors, ministers and religious parental figures teaching their indoctrinated young to avoid atheists like I was taught to before I became irreligious and eventually, de-converted. Those that do slip past the net take it upon themselves to preach rather than debate, and that's against the rules.

In most cases we're not hostile, we're simply exposing the flaws in their arguments and personal testimonies. And don't get me started on those who are so ignorant that they haven't even bothered to study their own theology and what it dictates before they come here.

I have no problem with everything else you said.

Yeah, we have this thing about demeanor, dignity, decency and mutual respect. We believe it makes us less like animals and more like God. But that's religionists for you.Undecided

I have the same thing Eyem, as do a few atheists here. I agree though, the vast majority are angry and take out their frustrations on the people they disagree with. Such is the Internet I'm afraid.

Not really much we can do but enforce the rules when people start insulting each other.

Come to preach on Atheist website. Get offended when they disagree. Hardly dignified.

Your arguments have been put through the wringer and found wanting, that isn't disrespect, that's discussion. Some have been less polite than others, and that's up to them. Be careful of how wide that brush you are painting with gets however.

If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?

Demeanor, dignity, decency, and mutual respect...

Oh, you mean like the Catholic Church circa WWII? Or the Catholic Church circa modern times in regards to all the conflicts in Africa, not the least of which we can point to the Lord's Resistance Army? How about the protestants with all their witch-burnings until the practice was forcibly outlawed, or the modern bible-belt-ist who thinks a woman's place is in the kitchen or in the nursery? Shall we speak of the famous lack of demeanor, dignity, decency, and mutual respect that resonates throughout the history books from Christians and their institutions, like the Inquisition, the Tithes, the Conquistadors?

Don't hold yourself up to be a moral paragon. You accept the mantle of religion, you accept the mantle of all the foul deeds of its followers, both past and present, ergo you need to get off your pedestal and lower your nose about 45 degrees.

Mabe if you started answering people's posts, reading their criticisms instead of being hung up on your vaunted pride, you'd get past the rookie theist part. As to me you seem no different than the usual shit-and-runner fundie idiots we get from time to time. Truly, I would like to be proven wrong about you on this matter. its a 100 to 1 chance. There are theists here I respect (not their belief, but them), eg Tack, Rayaan, Ryft, Cinjin, DeistPaladin, CoffeeVeritas and even fr0d0, that old sheep shagger Big Grin

But you are not even near that, and it only takes a stroll through the fora to see how frustrating is to try to talk with religionists. You speak of demeanor? what do you have to say about the OP you posted in this thread:

Kind of an hypocrite aren't you?

How? The population is just over 7 billion. 7/3 is 2 1/3.

How are you figuring 3 or is it just your way of padding your numbers?

edit: There are not 2.3 billion Christians.
