Lol, you've got backbone, nice to meet you. Smile I just finished a discussion about this on Facebook, I believe the gay community wants their marriage to be seen as acceptable to churches worldwide, I'm thinking it's not just a legal issue. I explained to some friends that Christians want to say "yes" to equality but "no" to homosexual behavior, which makes it a hard topic to vote on. I'm still not sure how I will vote.

Churches are PRIVATE institutions. I'd say if a Church doesn't accept gays, then those gays should say "fuck you" to those bigots and start their own church, or go to one that does accept them.

But as far as not being sure how to vote? This is a no brainer, if you have to think about it, you have serious problems.

RE: Same sex marriage
Originally this was a discussion about the implication of proposed legal changes in the UK which derailed into generalities about gay marriage.

Effectively, lots of churches want to be able to marry gay couples, but can't because that's against the law in the UK. So even if you are religious, and your church is accepting of gay couples being married, you still have to go to a civil union at a registry office, rather than a wedding in your own church of choice.

That's the bit that annoyed me the most really, is that this isn't even about gay people being married. Its about orthodox anti-homosexual churches dictating to other religions, and versions of their own religion what they can and can't do.

I'm not a fan of religion, but I think its a shame that if you do believe in a sky fairy, and want to have a civil union in your sky fairies place of worship, you can't do it.

The orthodox churches didn't just fight against gay marriage per se, they were fighting against other religions undermining them by allowing civil unions in their places of worship.

If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?

Well, it isn't just a commitment they do to eachother. Marriage is a commitment that you do to the society itself. It is the foundation of the family, and therefore, the human society.
Their love...Well, it's really not that relevant. You can be in love without being married, can you not?
It's not about any of these. I know what it's all about.
Quote:Wrong. Absolutely the wrong way round. Segregation is there because people want to be assholes. There is no such thing as sexual deviancy for consenting people of sexual maturity. Marriage has respected this at various points in history. On that basis, why should marriage legislation exist at all?
Marriage legislation exists in order to provide couples with legal rights, and also to take the institution of marriage under the protection of the state itself.
The state exists to protect and serve society. I think it's only fair that it protects a most vital aspect of society.
Besides, I think you know what deviancy is. Homosexuality is a deviant behavior, caused by biological abnormalities.
I don't know why we should grant it the same social acceptance that heterosexuals enjoy.
They may be granted legal rights, but under a different context. The difference must be known and drawn with clear lines.
Quote:You guys are talking about history of social norms and I am talking about law. Either allow gays to get married or get government out of ALL marriages. Since the law document of a marriage wont go away, then the right thing, the constitutional thing is EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW.

To not allow gays to get married is to treat a fellow citizen as second class.
Well, give them equal legal rights, then. But marriage is something that is only between a man and a woman. The legal definition of this are outlined in many countries. Equality is only amongst equals.

It is not an abnormality asshole. You simply find it yucky. So what? That is your baggage, not theirs.

Quote:Homosexuality is a deviant behavior, caused by biological abnormalities.

No your bigotry and homophobia is the fucking problem. Heterosexual men are perfectly capable of being abusive lying cheats themselves and women can be unfaithful too, so don't lecture any of us here about deviancy.

Quote: But marriage is something that is only between a man and a woman.

No, marriage is a mere ceremony and has been subject to all sorts of revisions through the history of humanity. In ancient times girls were mostly bartered like property. And in some cultures the vile practice of pre arranged marriages still exist(if not by law by stupid honor of the family). Girls or women who buck that tradition are thrown out of the family and or stalked and murdered.

If two adults want a legal document for same sex marriage that is not going to magically turn you or your kids gay. Nor is it going to have society degenerate into public orgies. You simply find gay sex yucky. TOO FUCKING BAD!

Quote:I don't know why we should grant it the same social acceptance that heterosexuals enjoy.

It's called being a decent human, something you are obviously not.

Quote:Marriage is a commitment that you do to the society itself.

No, marriage is a venture you are not forced into. There is no law forcing anyone to get married, at least not in most westernized secular nations I know of. And with half of all marriages ending in divorce in America, I'd say your childish "heterosexual glue theory" doesn't quite cut it.

What is up with the necromancy lately? I mean... threads from 2009 suddenly cropping up all over, threads from winters and springs long behind us suddenly in today's posts.

I just don't get it. But yet, I have to catch 'em all!
