It looks like that was exactly what happened here. A racist saw a black man and felt threatened. Said "fucking coon" and "these assholes always get away" which is clearly audible on the 911 call. He was told not to approach but did anyway, obviously looking for a confrontation, during which time the unarmed teen was shot. Yeah and he sounds real scared on that 911 call...

I'm still not sure on why a policeman would want this much attention on himself so he can simply shoot some black guy, and face charges.

You're barking up the wrong tree, sir: first of all it was not a policeman, secondly he was not arrested, and thirdly the charges were dropped, as he knew in advance they would be (i.o.w. he knew in advance he would go unpunished).

Besides: many racists consider themselves heroes for killing someone of a different race. And they love to be 'admired' as one. That's probably why he "want[ed] this much attention on himself".
