Why is it that a species can't last any longer than that?

Who said they can't?

I'm assuming a normal distribution here. Maybe a better question is: has any species lived longer than say 100 million years?

Coelacanth, Nautilus, Giant Tortoises, Ants, Crocodilians and feathered Dinosaurs. Not to mention some Cephalopods and plants (Gingko Biloba for example).
Forgot to mention, I am pretty sure one of the species of the guy with the stone eyes, I mean Trilobite, survived longer than 100 million years. As a whole, they lasted almost 300 million years.

Wikipedia says the Great White Shark has been around for 16 million years. Funny enough, I heard that it was old on Blade Trinity! xD

At the rate were going there will be a extinction of 100% of species.

I believe that the quote comes originally from Moore, Lalicker, and Fisher's "Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology". That's where I first read about it.
'The difference between a Miracle and a Fact is exactly the difference between a mermaid and seal. It could not be expressed better.'

"In short, Meyer has shown that his first disastrous book was not a fluke: he is capable of going into any field in which he has no training or research experience and botching it just as badly as he did molecular biology. As I've written before, if you are a complete amateur and don't understand a subject, don't demonstrate the Dunning-Kruger effect by writing a book about it and proving your ignorance to everyone else!
