Like I said in the chat room last night, the purpose of April Fools Day is to fool people. The problem is that on the Internet, so many sites have April Fools Day jokes that everyone is on high alert and it gets harder each year to pull something off. Previously, we haven't tried that hard to actually fool people, and we've just done silly things (like change people's religious views, convert the forum to "Christian Forums", etc). Google do the same thing these days; it's more about making people laugh than actually fooling people.

So this year we set out to actually pull off a proper prank, and as with all pranks, we needed time to prepare in order to add the level of realism needed to get people to actually believe that these accounts were real people, and not part of an April Fools Day joke. Part of the reason I called it "The Greatest April Fool of All Time" is because we actually managed to fool people, rather than just make an obvious joke that would make them laugh (as Google, reddit, etc do). Not only that, but we fooled people on such a large scale, and it was far more successful than any of us had thought it would be.

To be honest I wouldnt have cared if not in light over Tib comparing me to someone who wants kids to watch porn over arguing that RS get his account back from sock puppets.. The whole time Tib was calling me a sociopath, child porner, etc...etc...he was running his own sock puppet accounts while preaching to me about "common sense" when it comes to sock puppet accounts.

How can I have ANY respect for him over that crap wether it was a joke or not?

Perhaps the point was, that people were fooled only because they understood that sockpuppets were against the rules, and even moderators and owners should not be beyond the rules, and trust that the rules are upheld for everyone.

I'm not overly annoyed myself, I did laugh, the only bit that makes me a little irritable is the idea that I have wasted a lot of time over the last few weeks responding to people who I should have every reason to believe are genuine.

Just playing devils advocate on this one, I understand why people are angry about it. I just consider that on a scale of things to get shitty about, this is remarkably low on that scale.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out the dangerous precedent. If someone creates sockpuppet next year, and then declares it a big joke.. will you be enforcing the rules on them as a mere member, because that would be hypocritical.

I personally don't think I or any other staff member has done anything wrong, but I'd much rather see the community remain stable, and if that demands my resignation, so be it.

Breaking your own rules for the purpose of a prank (albeit it a very good one) is not doing anything wrong?
