It's only natural for people to believe what we're raised to, what everyone who matters to us believes. We're social animals who depend on each other for survival. A bias to go along with the group on matters that can't be proven one way or another probably has value in terms of getting to pass your genes along. People who were raised theist and completely abandon that are the exception, not the norm.

I like to say they are just stupid, but I am well aware that we are products of our raising. Enough indoctrination from my parents and I have might professed belief in a 6,000 year old earth also.

I have very religious parents and went to a school where they taught you stories in the Bible like they were historical fact yet when I grew up and learnt about real science and history I completely rejected those beliefs, and I know other people who did the same.

I might have a lot more understanding for theists if I hadn't hadn't had a fairly religious upbrining but the fact is I just see them as stupid and awkward for holding onto their beliefs in the face of all the evidence to the contrary.

I agree and offered those as an examples to counter the claim that theistic thinking inclines believers toward totalitarian thinking.

Actually, the claim was that it was fundamentalist thinking that inclines believers toward totalitarian thinking. I would argue that communism as practiced in China, Russia, Cambodia, and North Korea IS a form of fundamentalist thinking, in the broad sense of committment to holding to dogma when given a choice between dogma and contrary evidence.

I agree that a totalitarian politial system does not have ot be theistic. My point was that belief in God and intelligence are also not related because, for one thing, small children donot have a choice in how they are indoctrinated. And the more "totalitarian" their upbringing is, the less likely they are to ever dare to think for themselves. possibly, totalitarian was not the word I was looking for, maybe authoritarion would have been better. However, in some of the atheistic totalitarian regimes mentioned, isn't it also less likely that people are willing to thin for themselves and/or challenge the establishment?
