Theistic Arguments: Claims and proof

As Christians we are constantly testing the validity of our conclusions. If 1 + 1 no longer equalled 2 then we would have to throw away the assumptions stemming from that and start again.
I suppose the biblical equivalent would be if a root concept no longer fitted. If God were both just and unjust. If the result of faith in God didn't result in the best possible health.

Xtianity has been passing such tests for 2000 years now. Human error is what accounts for objection.

You mean Christians are unable to be in bad health? You are majorly deluded. So tell me, where except in your cavernous yet empty head has this ever been true?

Fortunately Phil, as an atheist you're supposed to be stupid.

Surely you of all people fr0d0 are aware that results do not verify causation.

Jews are still waiting for the messiah after 2000 years. Hindus still have countless gods that they worship. Mohammed's followers still believe Jesus was a nobody after 2000 years.

Christianity isn't the only religion still alive. So what?

I agree. But then that wasn't my meaning.

Then all are true in their claims, and you are defeated.

Nitpick: Islam dates from around 600 AD. or about 1400 years ago.

RE: Theistic Arguments: Claims and proof
I may need to clarify my point a bit better. While the opening post is being seen as an argument from ignorance I wasn't trying to exactly frame it in that way. The only point I was trying to make is that an argument has to be validated based on evidence not on simply pointing out holes in another persons worldview.

I do not think I have knowledge of whether or not there is such a thing as a God existing. I know that --->I CANNOT<--- disprove the existence of deity. Again since neither you Chad or you sexy welsh man (fr0d0) are fundamentalists I am not sure really where we agree or disagree. Also to the idea of me invalidating the atheist positionyou could say I invalidated gnostic atheism with my statement but I don't claim that position anyway.

With the example of the triangle/square my only point was proving that if one position can be invalidated it does not automatically prove the other one right unless additional evidence is introduced.

Proving that someone is wrong about something such as knowledge of a God doesn't prove he exists. I am again not saying that I think you can prove he does not exist. Although I do think that the typical portrayal of Yahweh in scripture can have a lot of doubt cast on it due to some inconsistencies that doesn't invalidate deity in of itself.

I am not really sure you Chad or Fr0d0 have done what I am talking about anyway. I opened this thread after watching someone go from defending/discussing the theistic position to simply asking atheists to account for all matter of things. My point by posting this was, I was hoping anyway, to try and reduce those trainwreck arguments that get no where like that.

I do not think you have to answer every supposed contradiction about scripture either. Again it also depends on what position you take as to what problems you would need to defend. Also there are questions that a theist could fairly answer, just like an atheist, with a "I don't know". I will admit though you mentioning the atheist doing the "fix all these contradictions issue" is something I most likely have been guilty of doing.

Just thinking here, but if two propositions are mutually exclusive and there can be no third option, then disproving one would be proving the other. If theism is true, atheism is false. If atheism is true, theism is false. They cannot both be true. Maybe I'm missing the point again?

RE: Theistic Arguments: Claims and proof
Great post Volly.

You keep mentioning 'invalidated' where I said 'rendered impotent' - a joke about an atheist position of attack only, that we see a lot. Perhaps you knew this. I'm prepared to give you the benefit of that doubt.

^^ ya he got you there Big Grin
