I don't know if you're missing the point it is probably that I am thinking I am saying one thing but communicating another.
As far as proving atheism and theism I hold the position that neither side can be validated. In order for me to completely validate atheism I would have to be able to know things which I cannot know. However I have yet to see theism be proven either hence why my position is Agnostic Atheism instead of straight atheism.
On some things you do have mutual exclusivity though. For whatever reason I didn't notice that theism/atheism would fall into that category. Although there is a third option with Atheism/Theism which is the we don't know answer. Not sure where if you would consider that a third position or if you would group that under the wing of atheism/theism or not.
With respect to deity there are really only four positions:
There is a deity
There is not a deity
I don't know
I don't care
My position is that I do not believe in one because I do not think there is evidence. However it is also my position that deity is possible if evidence could be provided.
