What your initial post seems to forget, is that Christianity is a boot, and a fish, and a shovel, and a fig tree, and a cross, and a temple, and a cannon, and a dog, and an iron, a ship, a car, a shoe, a top hat, a book, a new book, and an apple plus many other things.
The problem is asking the Christian what their Christianity actually means, and never get the same answer twice.
That's the part I detest the most these days, they want the protection of saying they are the worlds biggest religion, yet at the same time don't want to be associated with "those nutters who believe in talking snakes".
I wish they'd drop the term christianity, and admit they are usually different religions with a common source, so that next time someone looks at the statistics, they can see it for the group of minority religions it really is, instead of the claim of being one big happy family.
The worst evils are perpetrated by those claiming to be Christian™, Muslim™ et al on the backs of all those under the same broad tree but secretly tell yourself the other factions aren't really worshipping the true christian or muslim God.
So the issue is not for the atheist to understand christianity, because that would require an atheist to recognise each and every variety.
The real question to any variety of christian who moans that atheists "don't understand christianity", meaning THEIR form of christianity is why do they dismiss every form of every other religion without fully understanding them.

If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?
