Prove that rape and slavery are wrong. Indeed. Given the circumstances, I expect that would not be an easy task. I would assume that the OP does not recognize the existence (much less the authority) of the officer's source of morality, and I expect that the officer isn't going to recognize the authority of the OP's. Neither is likely to gain any ground in such an exchange, I fear. That is, unless one can convince the other that their moral authority says the opposite of what they think it does.
The conversation was destined to die. I didn't continue it after he said that. However, I will say that I'm concerned with what I heard. This is definitely something that, as atheists and I would assume scientific thinkers, we should examine. I think it's an aspect of extremist fundamentalism burrowed deep down within our society, and is subtle enough to barely be known. But he's not the only one who thinks this way.

Well, the concept of wrong and right have evolved throughout history.
While slavery was a reality of the old world, beyond the concept of right or wrong for the people of the time, for today's world, it is considered to be wrong, as we have at least a uniform list of basic human rights, which guarantee personal freedom from bondage. Similarly, rape was never really considered to be lawful to exercise on free women, perhaps, but the context which defines rape was changed. "Rape" was also taken in context of domestic, spousal abuse, and punished accordingly. Üze Tengri basmasar, asra Yir telinmeser, Türük bodun ilingin törüngin kim artatı udaçı erti? Prove that rape and slavery are wrong. I don't give a rat's ass if they are deemed right wrong or not, much less whether you could prove it is right or wrong. I am satisfied that any efforts on your part to advance your self interest will appear to most observers to have turn out very badly if you act as if they are right. |
