Can YOU still be a firm atheist after watching these?
RE: Can YOU still be a firm atheist after watching these?
When I was a gossoon, I once suggested to a teacher that the resurrection of Jesus would have been more impressive if he had been cremated.

I for one will be impressed if a person comes back to life after having an autopsy.

I will also re examine my disbelief in miracles after a few amputated limbs limbs grow back.

Well - its the NDE 'argument' once more. What seems to be true is: Many people change their lifes after an NDE - IMHO because they now know for real that they are mortal.

The sensations they felt and describe vary a lot. Tunnel, White light, extreme terror, feeling of complete happiness, out-of-body experiences etc. etc.

How come? Well the brain - realizing that an immediate shutdown could be possible - seems to go into a kind of 'last ditch' attempt -
and searches for stored information that match the current experience - but there is none. That's IMHO the reason why the brain produces a chain of sensations (like when you are dreaming) - its just a search through the 'database'.

Not only do those NDE experiences NOT proof the existence of a supernatural being (not to mention heaven or hell) - the 'testimony' of these NDE-survivors is IMHO flawed: They experienced something utterly life-threatening and I have a hard time to believe that they during that experience are capable of consistent (not to mention rational) thought at all.

Then - when the immediate danger is over, brain back to normal functioning - the brain tries to combine those inconsistent sensations to something that makes more sense.

Then the person awakes - and gets the 'sanitized' story from the brain. And voilà: They suddenly believe in life after death, heaven, hell and the whole package.

That's my opinion.

I had an NDE. It only made my atheism stronger.
You really believe in a man who has helped to save the world twice, with the power to change his physical appearance? An alien who travels though time and space--in a police box?!? [Image: TARDIS.gif]

That sounds like a very well informed opinion to me. It makes sense, and actually aligns with what the brain does after we suffer from a traumatic experience. It's well documented outside of NDEs; in natural disasters, relationship break-ups, by soldiers returning from war etc.

Hell, I have never been presented with counter-evidence good or bad.

There are a lot of 'crazies' out there that talk to people in their heads. Just most of them do not refer to the 'head voice' as god. The problem is still chemical in that the body's physiology is still recovering (or not).

I've been watching a lot of old episodes of 'Penn & Teller: Bullshit' lately. They did one that specifically looked at the supernatural, including near death experiences. It's amazing what happens to those ideas when you apply a little scientific research.

Claims of near Death Experiences have a FATAL FLAW

Virtually in every case - the people "see" exactly what they BELIEVE they will see - if they actually remember seeing things
THis is just another DREAM in which what you see does not represent anything real.
So Xtians see the christ - Muslims see allah - Hindi see Vishnu (ANd there are more claims of that that any other) - and non believers see only peace and tranquility

For the claims to have any value you would need to show that virtually ALL people see the same thing - regardless of what their beliefs are - and they do not do that one.

So - in fact - the claims of near death experiences are evidence AGAINST a god existing rather than for it
