A bit of a non sequitor when speaking of the games. Sports mad Australia has an excellent record of success in the Olympic Games, which far outweighs our size.

I won't get into a fatuous argument about relative importance; it's irrelevant to me. Australia is my home and the centre of my world.

Actually I was thinking about other areas where this view of our importance is not accurate. However I am a bit concerned when people are despairing of our seen to be "lack of performance" so far in the Olympic Games.

Given how important Australia is in the affairs of the world, we should be celebrating every medal Australian Olympians get in the games. Also I believe that precious taxpayers money should not be spent on trying to win more medals at both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

I could not agree more. The Olympic games are a series of competitions between professional athletes to see who will get most lucrative endorsements. Above all, the Olympic games are cynical, multi BILLION dollar industry. In my opinion, not one cent of taxpayer's money should be spent on them.

Here there is a fascination programme on public TV called "Gruen Sweat' about the games and big business.

Don't know if the clip below can bee seen outside of Oz.

AAAAND... interestingly enough 'the pitch' (the segment of that show where they bring in 2 ad agencies to make competing ads for weird/controversial things) in the first episode of gruen sweat was about letting olypmic atheletes use preformance enhancing drugs, which was talked about earlier in the thread.

Almost certain that link won't work for non aussies (without some effort Tongue)

Because of the shinning example Australia represents to the rest of the world. As a working class brit Australia represents how britain would be if we put 90% of the aristocracy to the sword. Therefore when toffee nosed Etonian rowers, beat the Ockers my heart sinks a little.

Have a heart for us down trodden people in the rain and fog you left behind.

Surprisingly it's not easy to win a gold medal.

Who'd have thought it?

It's usually easy enough for the Aussies to make it to the medals table. I can't even remember an Olympics when they didn't make it...

Granted, it seems AUS performed better in 2008, but they have won 26 medals so far, and there is plenty of competition left. I am surprised at how few gold medals they have won, but they've done well winning silver.

Britain has certainly done well, already surpassing their 2008 count.
