Also considering that back then there were no modern hospitals with state of the art technology and medicine. Though even today we'd have trouble overcoming the effects of inbreeding.

I can't think of a secular reason to hate people who are different from myself. Homophobia is nothing but the result of sheer intolerance and hatred. Such people do not belong in the modern world. Build a time machine and send them back to the dark ages where hating people for being different is normal, common and very much accepted behaviour.

Someones sexual orientation is irelevant as to whether I like them or not.
If a gay friend of mine was in trouble, I would bend over backwards to help him.

In Christopher Hitchens' memoir Hitch-22 he talks about his adolescent homosexuality at his private school (I used to work there) with a few people who went on to work in Margeret Thatcher's government(although he doesn't name them). I think it's quite likely that at all boys private boarding schools in the UK, homosexual activity is quite common.

Romans 1 mentions it. Personal experience incoming:
When I was a teenager I went through a stage of being more attracted to the same sex than the opposite.
I have however, changed my preferences since then. I would consider myself hetero-sexual, but I guess I have bisexual tendencies
It really wouldn't surprise me to know that a lot of other guys go through the same sort of period where they 'experience' shall we say, homosexuality, but then move on from it. I would put it down to going through a different stage of puberty.
At least that's all I'd say given my own experience.
