Since when have countries cared about the law when dealing with people they despise? I wouldn't be surprised if the USA convinced Sweden to create a new law that allowed extradition of Assange.

Of course that's possible, but I think unlikely. Sweden would lose international credibility. I guess it would depend on the quid pro quo/blackmail from America. Right now,it seems Sweden does not extradite people [to other countries] for political or military crimes or where they may face the death penalty.

I have no reason to think that Sweden has acted other than in good faith. I do not know enough about either English or international law to comment on the behaviour of the British government. (apart from the bleedin' obvious; it will act as governments always do;from self interest))

The Swedish government will not extradite Assange to the US should he face the death penalty there, as any possible extradition request from Washington is then subject to strict conditions, an official from the country’s Justice Ministry declared.

­“We will never surrender a person to the death penalty,” the deputy director of the Service for Criminal Cases and International Cooperation of Sweden’s Justice Ministry said in an interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper on Tuesday.

This means there should be strict guarantees from the US government that “the prisoner will not be executed in any case,” added Cecilia Riddselius. But, she added, so far her country has not received any extradition request from Washington.

It wouldn't for me neither. Especially given the NDAA indefinite detention possibility and the 6th amendment's 'speedy trial' guarentee has also been ignored in Bradley Manning's trial. Not to mention he can be arrested by the military and put in a military kangaroo court as soon as he enters the country.

Potential indefinite detention, fuck that. America sucks.

I really have no idea if he is really guilty of raping someone. However I'm sure a man of his status would act a bit more careful, especially concerning things that might damage his reputation....Well, that might be it! OR might not be.
I've done a quick read about the whole case, and it seems to me that he's dealing with two seperate cases, in two seperate cities.
The chief prosecutor stated that rape was out of question, and I believe that it was rather shocking for him to hear that the case was re-opened one month later by another Chief prosecutor.

However, it must be known that there is no formal charge of any crime against the man right now. He's simply wanted for questioning, or so the Swedish authorities state.

I think there is another way of looking at this; does anybody take their governments word for what is going on here? In fact a number of people are more inclined to believe Julian Assange, the only way the governments are going to be able to show they are acting honestly is by opening up their private messages to public show.
